Step 1: Prepare the Sponge
For this I used a circle template to cut out my sponge for this mini cake. I tried my best to get a clean cut all the way around. If you have a band saw this would work awesome, but I do not so I used scissors and did my best. Step 3: Make the Decorations
Next step was sculpting the m&m shaped pieces and my mini moon for the toppers our of foam clay and then letting them dry overnight. I then painted them using acrylics mixed with white pearlescent paint for a little shine. I used a floral cube and sewing pins to make the painting easier as they were quite small. Then sealed with mod podge. |
Step 2: Apply Whipple or Spackle
Using a plastic knife I applied the whipple like I would regular icing to a cake. It was actually quite hard to get smooth so I did a lot of this with my fingers and it was very messy. I then set it aside to dry over night and it looks kinda like brie. Step 4: Finish the Cake
I primed the cake with mod podge and then painted it a light brown like my reference. After this dried I sealed it with more mod podge and then carefully applied the outside icing with my whipple icing (could using spackle and an icing tip). I then used the whipple pen in brown to draw the star in the center. It goes on very light but dries this pretty dark chocolate color. After this all dried I applied the little decorations to the cake using some hot glue. |
