Step 1: Sculpt Mini Marshmallows
So for this step I used foam clay to sculpt a good number of mini marshmallows and let them air dry overnight on some wax paper. Model magic could also work. For foam clay often the side resting on the wax paper does not dry as fast so I made sure to mix them up after several hours so it could fully dry. Step 5: Arrangement
Now that the paint is completely dry I used E6000 to glue the sponge to the bottom of the cup and then started arranging the marshmallows on the top. I used hot glue to attach the marshmallows to the sponge and the other marshmallows and adjusted it until I was happy. Step 6: Chocolate Drizzle
The final step to this hot cocoa prop is the chocolate drizzle. I added this with whipple pens which is my preferred craft icing brand. The consistency is nice and thin but still adds dimension and it was a really easy final touch. |
Step 2: Prepare the Sponge
For the hot cocoa I decided to use a sponge for the drink texture. Often when I make hot cocoa at home it will get some slight bubbles so the sponge would work well for that. To get it to shape I traced the mug shape onto my sponge a few times until I could stack the pieces to the height I wanted in my mug. Step 3: Cut Mario Logo (optional)
Since I used this mug for my Princess Peach Hat Kingdom cosplay I decided to use my Cricut to cut out the Mario logo to put on the mug. Definitely an optional step, and also something you could do with a x-acto knife. Step 4: Painting
In this step I painted my sponge brown on the top and about 1/2in down and let it fully dry. I then primed the mini marshmallows with two coats of mod podge and then painted them adding highlights and shadows and sealing again with mod podge. I used sewing pins in each of the marshmallows to help with this process as they were so small to hold and paint at the same time. |
